Kucinich tops other Dem Presidential leaders in key CA straw poll
SAN MATEO, CA - Despite millions of campaign dollars being spent by the poll-leading Democratic Presidential candidates to woo California voters, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich scored a stunning second-place finish in a bell-weather Presidential straw poll here today.
In a caucus-like setting open to all Democratic voters in the state, Kucinich came in significantly ahead of top-spenders Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and only slightly behind former U.S. Senator John Edwards.
Official results released by the San Mateo County Democratic Party this evening showed that Edwards received 29% of the total votes cast, Kucinich received just under 24%, and Obama and Clinton came in third and fourth, with 22.5% and 16.8% respectively. The other Democratic candidates were all in the low single digits.
"This is clear and compelling evidence of the strong and rising undercurrent of grassroots support for our campaign, not just in California, but all across the country," Kucinich said. "When independent-minded Democratic voters and activists have the chance to vote their beliefs and their consciences, celebrity and campaign war chests don't matter."

The National Lawyers Guild opposes the confirmation of Michael Mukasey as Attorney General of the United States
The Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings on Michael Mukasey's nomination for attorney general demonstrated he cannot be relied upon to function as an independent leader at the Department of Justice. Mukasey claims he doesn't know what water boarding is, so he can't say if it constitutes torture. Mukasey made the incredible claims that "we do not torture" and "I don't think people are mistreated" at Guantánamo.

With his usual devious mastery, Rove has seized upon the national outrage sparked by his electoral larceny and used it as smokescreen while he makes the American electoral system even MORE unfair, and even EASIER to rig. Thus the administration has fired federal attorneys when they would not participate in a nationwide campaign to deny minorities and the poor their access to the polls. It has spent millions of taxpayer dollars to install electronic voting machines that can be "flipped" with a few keystrokes. And under the guise of "reforming" our busted electoral system, it is setting us up for another presidential theft in 2008.

Billions of taxpayer dollars were saved.

We keep hearing that Iraq is not Vietnam. And surely any competent geographer would agree. But the United States is the United States -- still a country run by leaders who brandish, celebrate and use the massive violent capabilities of the Pentagon as a matter of course.

They complained that with the coming age of deregulation (about two dozen states deregulated their electricity businesses) nuclear power plants were too expensive, inefficient and obsolete to compete in the coming green age.

Reflections on the passing of our people of AIM
Earlier today I spoke with a Chief on the East Coast that he heard through the "Indian Grapevine" that Vernon Bellecourt had passed. I called a friend to see if he had heard and he hadn't. I didn't post anything since it was unconfirmed, and out of respect for the family, they should be the ones who made the announcement.
In that time I reflected on the men and women of the American Indian Movement who in their Youth began the struggle for Native rights in Minneapolis. Then South Dakota, Oklahoma, Colorado, Oklahoma and so on. It was a prairie fire that frightened the government. It was also the fire that captured the imagination and spirit of young boys such as myself. I was 12 years and just been placed in a children's home and the house parent asked me what I thought about what the Indians were doing on TV. It was the scene of the BIA takeover. I had not a clue as to what it meant. Unfortunately, I hadn't heard the name of Lehman Brightman or the occupation of Alcatraz.
