Why (almost) everyone should support marijuana legalization
Recently a Pew poll came out that showed for the first time in the history of the question, more Americans support legalizing marijuana than think it should remain criminal. I was talking it over with someone and I think the bigger issue is not if it should be supported but why? I thought I’d break down why every group should support legalization.
Let’s start with the political parties……..
You will hear of wars and rumors of Star Wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed
Star Wars: Episode VII rumors have been running rampant ever since the new film was announced the moment Disney purchased Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise from creator George Lucas.
First the rumors all circled around who would direct the new franchise, and that was finally settled when Disney hired Lost creator and the man responsible for the resurrection of Star Trek, J.J. Abrams to lead the charge.
Next came the rumors about the old cast members from the original series returning in some capacity for the new films. We then heard about actors such as Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher going on diets to drop some pounds so they could appear in the new movies.
Now the latest rumor involves an actor who was in both the original series and the prequels released by George Lucas, who could be making a return from the dead (sort of) in the new movies that will begin with Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015.
According to several news sites, Ian McDiarmid is apparently rumored to reprise his role as Emperor Palpatine in the new Star Wars series.
Marvel Comics Lines Up a Big Fall With Thor 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Big comic book events, both on the page and the big screen, have traditionally been a Summer thing, but with an impressive list of upcoming films, comic crossover events and even a TV show, this year Marvel Comics has a Fall line-up that's just as exciting as any June.
The biggest event is the release of Thor 2: The Dark World, coming to theaters on November 8. In the second post-Avengers Marvel Studios movie, the God of Thunder will be facing elves that make the ones in The Hobbit movies look like a bunch of peace-loving hippies. Played by Doctor Who's Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston, the villainous Malekith leads his dark elf army to attack both Asgard and Earth and Thor will need the help of all of Asgard's warriors, including his brother Loki, if he's going to defeat them. Tom Hiddleston's Loki is a major fan favorite after the first Thor movie and Marvel's The Avengers and they couldn't have done the sequel without him. The filmmakers even went back and shot more scenes with him because they felt there just wasn’t enough Loki!
No Military Coups for America? What About November 1963?
Really? What about November 22, 1963?
“Oh, Jacob, don’t be silly. President Kennedy’s assassination couldn’t have been orchestrated by the U.S. national-security state, notwithstanding the overwhelming amount of evidence pointing in that direction, because it’s just inconceivable that such a thing could happen here in our country. That’s just a conspiracy theory. Such things only happen in places like Egypt … or Chile … or Iran … or Guatemala … or South Vietnam and, yes, oftentimes with the support and participation of the U.S. military and the CIA, but such a thing could never happen here in our country.”
The March on Washington through the eyes of a young radical
The March on Washington represented much more than ‘Jobs and Freedom.’ It was not only a push for equality, but a demand for equality at a time when it was inconvenient to do so. The repression of African Americans in civil society for so long is not something to be brushed aside as a historical note. Deprived of their basic, natural rights, it was not timely to demand the recognition of those rights. Indeed, it would have been much easier to wait until Congress eventually came around to its senses on the matter. That reasoning would not satisfy Martin Luther King Jr.; equality is a cause that does not wait.
Absurdities: A document without an author, a quote without an attribution, and an assurance without proof
50 years later: The president’s response
Much of the press is speculating about whether the president can reach the “King standard.” Can he deliver an address with the poetry and the vision that made Dr. King’s speech timeless?
But, I suggest to you that this is the wrong standard by which to measure the president. Barack Obama isn’t the leader of a March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He is the leader of the government. The March on Washington 50 years ago was a call by an oppressed people seeking justice. As the call to the march detailed, we marched to “help resolve an American crisis,” a crisis “born of the twin evils of racism and economic deprivation.”
Fifty years later: What would King say now?
A. Philip Randolph’s call for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom showed the political leaders of America that the time for change was at hand. As Bob Dylan would sing the following year, “The Times They Are a-Changin’” – whether white America was ready or not.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. took the stage for remarks listed as item 16 on the official program. Yet his “I Have a Dream” speech is probably what is best remembered from that momentous day. From the moment he began to speak, the crowd was rapt, many chanting in response to his words.
