Crosby/Nash & the view from deja vu
When a concert starts off 8 miles high, only the truly great can keep it there. That's what David Crosby & Graham Nash did the other night in Newark, Ohio. The wind beneath their wings was an outstanding foursome of virtuoso musicians.
The result was a three-hour love fest that should not be missed.
Crosby/Nash are transcendently talented buddies who come with a set list nicely balanced between the old, the mellow, the rockin', the oddball and the new.
They combine a pleasant stream of bullshit-free banter with a virtuoso professionalism that speaks of comfort and grace.
The evening standards were in abundance, ranging from "Marrakesh" and "Déjà vu" to "Guinevere," "Our House" and "Wooden Ships." All came with power and a fresh angle.
What got the show to a new level was the truly terrifying team including James Raymond on keyboards, Dean Parks on guitar, Kevin McCormick on bass and Steve DiStanislao on drums. Each brought a monster game to a seamless ride through a whole generation's comfort zone.

May 5 Statehouse rally stands up to Kasich's budget

A contingent of demonstrators started marching to the Statehouse from OSU campus at 15th and High Street.

Summary of Governor Kasich’s damaging efforts
The Law resulting from SB 5 would:
Rescind the 1983 law which allowed collective bargaining by 360,000 public employees. A quote from the April 5th issue of the Columbus Dispatch, “The Kasich administration says local governments could save nearly $1.1 billion from health care and longevity pay provisions of SB 5, but a contract expert says that the methodology used to calculate the numbers for school workers is flawed.” It would be a burden on the backs of the teachers and other employees who are not overpaid. They earn 12% less than equally qualified employees in the private sector. Innovation Ohio estimates that 51,000 public employees will lose jobs due to SB 5. Many experience teachers will be replaced by those from Teach for America who are poorly trained and inexperienced.
The “saving” would be more than offset by higher costs at all levels of government:
1. Employees would pay less tax because they would earn less.
2. Some would lose their jobs and have to use their unemployment insurance.

Ain’t I A Person gives voice to the voiceless
It’s fitting that Keith Kilty, Professor Emeritus at Ohio State University’s Department of Social Work, borrows from Sojourner Truth in titling his film “Ain’t I A Person?” At its core, the documentary does on video what Michael Harrington did in print with his epic book on poverty, The Other America.
Kilty, in the tradition of Harrington, is taking the all-too-often invisible poor and humanizing their plight. This is the ultimate success of this well done documentary. Produced primarily in Ohio with much of it set in urban Cincinnati, a city at one point with the highest rate of urban poverty in the U.S., the film succeeds not only as a record of human suffering but also functions as a primer on poverty.
Kilty centers the film around a variety of questions that are essential for any intelligent discussion of public policy aimed at reducing poverty. His years as a professor aid him in explaining what poverty is, how it is defined, and what are its root causes.

A message to the Governor on the death penalty - in memory of Da'rryl Durr
On April 20th 2011 a year will have passed since the state of Ohio took the life of Da'rryl Durr. He had spent 22 years on Death Row. In that time he wrote to many people and if you are reading this then you may well have been someone who enjoyed hearing from Da'rryl and being challenged by his views and outlook on life despite the dreadful life he had lived on Death Row for so many years.
Less than three hours before he died Da'rryl spoke on the phone to Erwin James a reporter from the Guardian newspaper. Da'rryl told him "If there is a difference that you can make in the life of another person, you want to make that difference." He went on to say, "Please give my love to everybody that supported me and tried to help me. And when you write about me, do me a favour and please – are you familiar with St Paul's treatise on love?" .... "Tell them that's what I believe: in faith, hope and love – and that the greatest of these is love."

Antother letter in support of Dr. Gerard Nuovo
I saw your article dated 1/3/11 ( Ohio State's medical industrial complex under fire for unnecessary surgeries). I am here to tell you that the problem you so well described is actually much worse.
First, I want you to know that Gerard Nuovo, MD has personally helped me with several medical issues over the years. Thus, it is from direct experience that I can tell you he is an excellent MD who goes the extra mile for all of his patients. His knowledge of medicine in general is profound, and this certainly applies to his specialty, Gynecologic Pathology.

Women in Central Ohio who had a Gynecologic biopsy at OSUMC need to send their biopsies to an outside Gyn Pathology expert
I am writing about my personal life saving experience. I am not in Ohio but live in NY. I met Dr. Nuovo when I was diagnosed with cancer in my uterus. I was shocked, heartbroken and scared. I am a 53 year old women, fit and in great health, how could this have happened to me? My Gyn scheduled me for a full hysterectomy. I asked Dr. Nuovo to review my slide at the advice of a friend.

I am a 53 year old women, fit and in great health, how could this have happened to me? My Gyn scheduled me for a full hysterectomy. I asked Dr. Nuovo to review my slide at the advice of a friend. I didn’t know slides could be signed out and sent for a second opinion. I did know to get a second opinion but I would have taken the slide results to another gyn. Big mistake! I was lucky to find out the pathologist was incorrect! Dr. Nuovo’s care, precision and expertise in reviewing my slide brought me a miracle. He called me at 9:30 am the next morning to tell me my polyp was benign. I cancelled the surgery and have enjoyed every day of my life from that moment on. It is 2011!!! Why is this happening in Ohio and probably everywhere? Why do women not know that the Pathologist if not experienced in Gyn pathology CAN and DO make critical mistakes? How can Dr. Nuovo be barred from reviewing biopsies at OSUMC? Is it that he is honest?
Demand that Ohio investigate torture allegations
Dr. Larry C. James, who worked as Chief Psychologist at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantánamo Bay, is one of those psychologists. In this role, Dr. James oversaw abusive interrogations and designed programs to exploit the psychological weaknesses of detainees. During his tenure at the detention center, boys and men were systematically abused. Techniques included threats of rape and death; forced nudity; sleep deprivation; extreme isolation; short-shackling into stress positions; and physical assault.
