Ohio State University continues to increase its number of animals used for experimentation
The Ohio State University continues in its efforts to separate the public's
views of animals it uses for research into the "lower" and "higher" animals,
the "higher" animals being primates, dogs, cats, and rabbits; the "lower"
animals being rats and mice.
OSU distributed a press release April 3, 2003, which stated , "The university is constantly working to reduce the number of animals required to conduct its research projects and uses alternative approaches to animal use when and where they are feasible"

Why Is Richard Fox the One We Execute?
Ohio recorded 652 murders in 1989, sentenced eight killers to death that
year, and has scheduled a Wednesday February 12 execution for one who
confessed, Richard Fox. State law permits execution for the worst
murderers, where aggravating circumstances outweigh mitigating factors
beyond a reasonable doubt. The Ohio criminal justice system singled out
Richard Fox as its most deserving killer of the year because of geography
and judicial error.
AN INNOCENT MAN ! !
written 19th February 2002
Today they killed a friend of mine
for a crime he didn’t do
John Byrd was an innocent man
and THAT they certainly knew!
The Ohio courts and Governor Taft
didn’t give a bloody damn
They gleefully sent John to his death
and killed an innocent man.
Why did they ignore the facts
and send John to his death?
Why did they ignore the truth
and steal my friend’s last breath?
Where was this so called justice
that American’s boastfully claim to possess?
Obviously it’s just another fallacy
American hypocrisy at it’s best

Death Row Round: Hagan opposes death penalty on moral ground
Columbus Dispatch editors are at it again. In a Sept. 10 headline, the Big D proclaimed “Hagan wouldn’t execute child killer.” Similar headlines have appeared in the past against other disfavored politicians, usually substituting words such as “Candidate X won’t execute cop killer.” Despite the sensational nature of the Hearst-style yellow journalism headline, the article by Alan Johnson is quite revealing. The second paragraph reads: “But if Timothy F. Hagan were governor, Buell’s life would be spared — along with those of the 204 others on Ohio’s Death Row.”
Johnson explains: “Hagan, the Democratic candidate for governor, is a lifelong opponent of capital punishment on personal and religious grounds.” Johnson writes, “If elected, Hagan vows to invoke a moratorium on executions, as the governors of Illinois and Maryland have done.”
Hagan told Johnson, “I don’t think the state should take the life of an indiv-idual.” Some suggestions for Dispatch headline writers: “Hagan wants Ohio to join European Union on human rights,” “Hagan says ‘Thou shalt not kill’,” and “Hagan wants moratorium on death penalty like Illinois and Maryland.” Or, see above.

Justice denied again in Ohio
The state of Ohio killed Robert Buell on September 25. The mainstream mass media made sure that everyone knew that Buell was sentenced to death for the sexual assault and murder of 11-year-old Krista Harrison. During Buell’s eighteen years on death row, he was unsuccessful, with few exceptions, in getting out the facts of his case.
In January 1995, the Columbus Free Press uncovered a State Highway Patrol report authored by Marc Rogols documenting that investigators from the Ohio Public Defender’s Office (OPDO) were falsifying records on a fifteen or so death row inmates. Chester “Briss” Craig, a former supervisor at the OPDO, told the Free Press that Buell had probably been denied a proper investigation of his claims of innocence. Buell maintained that he did not kill Harrison.
In January 1992, Craig filed a complaint with the Ohio Inspector General’s Office that said: “Some of our investigators previously assigned to Ohio Public Defender’s clients before they were convicted had not met with or conducted any kind of investigation on behalf of these clients.”

Gunslinger, Part II
FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MOB, OR KEEP YOUR SPINNAKER FULL!
Gunslinger, Part I
Like every little boy, I played cowboys and Indians, army and other childhood pastimes such as dodge ball or hide and seek with my friends. When not engaged in these games we often played football, basketball and, of course, baseball. We pretended to be the sports heros of the day - Jim Brown, Mickey Mantle, Jerry West and the big O. We always came through, we always won the big game. I too played these games. These men were my heroes. My favorite big game, and my biggest of heroes; however, I enjoyed by myself. I knew of no other aspiring Winston Churchills, Lafayettes, FDRs, Harry Trumans, Ikes, Langston Hughes', W. E. B. DuBois', Platos, Lincolns, Frederick Douglas' or Henry Clays. These men I admired, tried to emulate and dreamed of becoming.
Permit to mine watershed of Dysart Woods hearing May 15
The Ohio Division of Mineral Resources scheduled a meeting May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Belmont Technical College Red Room for Ohio Valley Coal Company’s Permit D-0360-13 (-13 for short) which would allow access from the -7 permit area to the -12 permit area, which includes all of Dysart Woods including the old growth forest.
If granted, Ohio Valley Coal Company could argue that the state must issue the -12 permit to mine under Dysart Woods since it permitted the -13 entrance main to the -12 permit. Further, the permit includes more than 20 acres of mining in the watershed buffer zone of Dysart Woods, which the Lands Unsuitable Petition appeal requests to be made off limits to mining.
Dysart Woods is among the most endangered ecosystem in the world according to a 1996 U.S. Department of Interior report. A map of the proposed mining permit, and the already approved and appealed -9 permit is at
Meanwhile, the Ohio Division of Mineral Resources has yet to deem the -12 permit complete, which would undermine all of Dysart Woods, including all of the old growth forest areas with longwall and room and pillar mining.

Pets Without Parents Columbus
Pets Without Parents Columbus was opened on June 1, 2001 due to the closing of a local shelter, Adopt-A-Pet, which served central Ohio for over a decade. Realizing the loss of AAP would cause a void, Pets Without Parents was established to continue the salvation of the many homeless and unwanted animals.

Highlands Nature Sanctuary
There is an incredibly biologically special place, right here in Ohio. It's
called the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. It had been known by its current name
for 5-6 years. It's located in south central Ohio, in which (at least) three
major bio-regions
exist. It includes land where the glaciers came through, and stopped,
(depositing seeds of plant species usually found further north), the
western front of the Appalachian foothills, limestone bedrock of the west,
and sandstone and shale of the east. All of these "edge" effects increase
biodiversity exponentially-gifting the area with an extraordinarily high
number of rare wildflowers, trees, and ferns. It is one of the most
biologically diverse areas in the state, possibly in the country (ok,
excluding the Everglades).
